Venice Bakery

Without a doubt, pizza was one of the hardest things to have to give up when my food problems began 10 years ago. Back then, the free from market was still relatively small and the chances of getting your hands on a gluten, wheat and dairy free pizza base of any kind was pretty impossible. It is only actually in the past year that I introduced pizza back into my life when I found some of the Sainsbury’s own brand in the Free From aisle – of course for anyone who knows what it is like when something you haven’t eaten in years suddenly appears on the shelf specially made to accommodate your dietary needs, it is like opening your presents on Christmas day!!

I like the Sainsbury’s bases, but they do have a tendency to crumble and break and other pizza mixes I have tried seem to either lack flavour or taste too ‘floury.’ I first came across Venice Bakery at the Allergy and Free From Show in Liverpool whilst nosing about and trying to squeeze in for a slice of whatever everyone seemed to be crowding around. I was offered a slice of one of their pizzas which was cooked also with MozzaRizella, a cheese that is dairy, gluten and soy free and made in Italy. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the pizza tasted and I don’t say this lightly when I say it was nicer than any wheat based pizza I ever tried in the past. Of course I bought 2 large pizza bases and 2 batches of the MozzaRisella cheese to take home.

Upon opening up the packaging around the base up I could tell the difference in quality compared to that of supermarket bases. It was nice and moist and stayed in-tact. The taste once cooked was absolutely delicious, slightly browned at the ends to get that nice fried crispy taste that I love in pizzas. I could actually quite happily eat the base like bread as it was so good and I shall definitely be purchasing some of the flatbreads that Venice Bakery do.

On the whole I couldn’t find one criticism of Venice Bakery, I hope they never stop making such beautiful pizzas. I give them a 10/10 and a big thank you for bringing top-notch pizza back into my life!

For my pizza topping I used gluten free Black Farmer sausages, yellow pepper, red onion and cherry tomatoes on a tomato and basil sauce with MozzaRisella cheese dotted on top and a sprinkling of herbs and garlic on the base.
